Monitoring of topsoil-stripping prior to the development of a single dwelling was undertaken on 11 October 2001. The site is in a field beside a modern access roadway and lies near a number of recorded monuments: a church and graveyard (SMR 8:45), a ringfort (SMR 8:46) and a castle site (SMR 8:47). Only the church is visible from the site.
The footprint of the house and the adjacent areas affected by the development were stripped down to the level of subsoil, c. 0.3m below the surface. The subsoil was a sandy dark grey soil with limestone and shale. A shallow layer of topsoil, 0.15m deep, overlay the subsoil. The sod layer was 0.15m deep.
Nothing of archaeological interest was exposed and no finds were recorded
