The derelict gasworks site in Waterford is across John’s River from the walled medieval city. In February 2001 test-pits were cut to investigate the level and extent of industrial pollution prior to any redevelopment plans. Twelve test-pits were monitored. Construction material for the gasworks overlay grey estuarine silt at 0.9–1.3m below ground level. The site had been topsoiled prior to the construction of the gasworks in the 1820s, and during subsequent expansions of the site. Cattle bones recovered at c. 3m below ground level appear to be from one adult, partly articulated and crudely butchered, with no associated midden.
