New foundations for a stair and lift well were monitored during refurbishment of a building on the corner of Parnell Street/Catherine Street. The site is on low ground outside the city wall, beside the road (Catherine Street, formerly Colbeck Street) to the nearby St Catherine’s Abbey. Maps indicate that the building overlies a late medieval mill lade, watercourse, and probably overlies late medieval/ early post-medieval suburban development.
The new lift well cut 1.4m of 19th-century construction debris, into 19th-century garden soil. No material of archaeological interest appears to have been disturbed.
