Two trenches were cut by machine in the garden of a 20th-century dormer building beside Castle Avenue in May 2001. The building was to be removed and replaced with two new houses. Substantial landscaping was represented in one trench by platforms and ditches (but no remains of buildings), probably constructed in the early 17th century along with other major works at and around the castle. The landscaping would have helped drainage, but would have had a limited defensive role since upcast material was spread flat rather than embanked beside the ditches. The second trench cut ground badly disturbed by the 20th-century building.
