Monitoring of a large-scale housing scheme for the local UDC took place in March and July 2001. Geophysics/contour survey and monitoring had previously been carried out on the site by Deirdre Murphy of ACS Ltd (Excavations 2000, No. 990), and Dave Pollock had opened test-pits prior to the commencement of the construction phase. A number of features in two distinct areas were encountered during topsoil-stripping and were subsequently dealt with by Emer Dennehy (see No. 1242, Excavations 2001, 01E0327). A third site was identified later, and excavated by John Tierney under a separate licence. Stray artefacts recovered during the topsoil-stripping include several struck chert flakes and a fragment of lignite bracelet, as well as more common 18th/19th-century finds. The two sites point towards extensive settlement activity in both the prehistoric and early medieval periods. Construction has now begun, but two further phases of the site will begin in 2002.
