This development involved the monitoring of the removal of material within the ruins of the Blackmill, a large disused mill building immediately adjacent to St Cronan’s round tower. Test excavation was carried out under the original licence (see Excavations 2000, No. 964, for the first phase of excavation), and the remains of the mill’s original stone floor were found in several locations throughout the building. This floor was left intact at the time as the proposed development of the building may have been able to incorporate it. However, subsequent changes to this plan required its removal and further excavation below it.
The patchy remains of the stone floor were removed and a further 1m of material excavated beneath it. No archaeological remains relating to the building or the earlier ecclesiastical site upon which it stands were found.
