An archaeological assessment was required as a planning condition for the demolition of internal walls and a two-storey extension; however, construction work commenced prior to the appointment of an archaeologist. Eachtra were engaged to produce an archaeological impact assessment. The site is outside the medieval walled town and is datable to the 1840s.
A series of foundation trenches were mechanically excavated and were found to contain archaeological deposits. Modern deposits such as plastic sheeting demonstrate that the internal walls are of recent date. Below these in Trench 1 a cultivation soil was found to overlie a well-preserved in situ cobbled surface. This would appear to be an external yard surface. No finds were recovered from these contexts. An in situ mortared floor surface was found in Trench 3. This has been interpreted as part of the original fabric of the building.
