Monitoring of footpath and service pipe replacement throughout the town by Cashel Urban District Council took place between 10 January and 7 February 2002. The work was conducted on Main Street, Friar Street, John Street, William Street, Lower Gate Street and Dominic Street. Groundworks achieved a maximum depth of 0.4m.
Animal bone and oyster shells were recovered from William Street. While this material is consistent with urban medieval archaeological levels, it was unstratified and mixed with more modern material. Similar material was retrieved from both John and Friar Streets, within 40m of Main Street.
The foundation level of a possible medieval structure was uncovered beneath the footpath on Friar Street, c. 40m from Main Street and on its south-western side. It measured 2.2m in length, ran parallel to the existing street frontage and protruded from it for 0.4m. The wall comprised two courses of dressed limestone and lime mortar-bonded stone. Works in the past had disturbed the north-western part of this structure.
The eastern end of the works on Friar Street and the western end of John Street retained a portion of the original street cobbles and gullies. These areas date from the Victorian period and extend between 3.4–0.3m and 32m by 2.9m.
