Monitoring took place of all groundworks being carried out during the Carrick-on-Suir flood relief scheme. Nineteen trenches were excavated, the majority concerned with drainage associated with the construction of the new quay wall. The material excavated from these trenches consisted mostly of sterile sand, which was deposited for the purpose of land reclamation. A buried quay wall was uncovered in a large number of these trenches, on the northern quay. It was parallel to the River Suir and the existing quay wall, and was 10–15m north of the river’s edge. The wall was left in place and was rarely impinged upon. The trenches were 2–3m deep and were for the most part unstable, so access was not possible. In these cases the wall was photographed and a measured sketch was made.
A series of wide shallow trenches were also excavated for the purpose of berm and wall construction. They were backfilled with impermeable material. A number of pumping stations were installed as part of this project and were tested under separate licences. Some work was carried out on the existing quay wall, which entailed plastering unstable portions of the wall. Currently the final phase of drainage is being completed on the south quay, to the west of the development.
