A single hand-dug trench measuring 3m by 1m in the garden at the rear of the old dispensary in Ballina village revealed no features or deposits of archaeological significance. There was c. 0.45m of garden soil over 0.45–0.5m of grey-brown clay over what is believed to be subsoil. In one side of the trench was a modern drain.
A mixed commercial and residential development is planned for this and the adjoining properties. The work, carried out on 31 March, was part of a requirement from Tipperary (NR) Co. Council for further information prior to a decision on outline planning permission. The area excavated was the only one currently available for testing.
