Monitoring of total topsoil removal across an area measuring 90m north–south by an average of 25m was undertaken prior to the construction of a road to the rear of Sligo General Hospital. Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered.
Two anomalies identified by Christina Fredengren during an earlier test-trenching exercise were further investigated. The first, a large boulder measuring 1.4m by 1.1m by 0.8m, although unusually large, appeared to be a natural inclusion in the boulder clay which formed the underlying subsoil throughout the investigated area. The boulder was completely covered by topsoil and firmly bedded into the natural subsoil. No indication of archaeological activity was uncovered in the vicinity of the rock. Nor was any evidence of a cut found surrounding the boulder to suggest that it had been intentionally placed in position.
The second anomaly, a brown-grey ‘cultural layer’ with inclusions of red brick, was found to occupy an area measuring 35m east–west by 15m towards the southern edge of excavation. This layer was clearly associated with the construction of the carpark to the east of the site. Its composition was uniformly gritty with minor humic inclusions. It contained fragments of modern red brick and white glazed ceramics, the majority of which were abraded and patinated as if the material had been disturbed on a number of occasions.
