Following initial monitoring and subsequent test-trenching of the site prior to development, a number of human skeletons were exposed from unmarked graves. A transfer of licence was issued to excavate the site.
A total of 49 inhumations were recorded, along with quantities of disarticulated human bones. A total of 32 skeletons, those from unmarked graves, will be examined.
The burials all date from between the late 18th and early 20th centuries. The site also contained four pits and a linear trench, which were dug into the subsoil below the level of the burials. These contained occupation debris of cockle, mussel and oyster shell, as well as a quantity of post-medieval pottery sherds and glass, animal bone and fragments of iron, indicating that the site was occupied prior to its use as a graveyard.
