Planning permission was sought to construct a two-storey workshop/studio with associated works in the backyard of Liam McGettigan’s pub and B&B, Connolly Street, Sligo. An assessment based on pre-development testing and a desk study was required. Connelly Street is at the southern edge of Sligo town, in the townland of Caltragh.
There was a possibility that the town wall of 1689, as identified by the Urban Archaeological Survey of Sligo, ran across the site.
Three test-trenches were mechanically opened. No archaeological deposits were uncovered. All deposits uncovered were of modern date, post-dating the 18th century. No remains of the town wall were found. It was recommended that further monitoring take place during the excavation of the foundations.
