Sligo Corporation proposes to construct a carpark to the rear of the Model Arts School, overlooking the town on Connaughton Road. The site is c. 70m south of the ‘Green Fort’, a 17th-century star-shaped fort.
Three test-trenches were mechanically excavated. A 65m-long trench was excavated east–west across the site; nothing of archaeological significance was found, confirming the historical and cartographic evidence that this part of the town was agricultural land up to the present. Two further test-trenches were excavated running north from the rear of the Model Arts School, with similar results.
