Monitoring of groundworks for the laying of foul and storm pipes commenced in November 2001. The first stage of the Sligo Main Drainage, Pearse Road Contract, commenced midway along Pearse Road. Pearse Road, to the south of Sligo town, is one of the main approach roads into the town
The pipeline route was 630m long. The trenches to facilitate the pipes were 2.4–2.5m wide and 1.9–2.1m deep. The entire route extended along the existing public road. There was no instance where it extended through recorded archaeological monuments.
No archaeological remains were uncovered in the course of the groundworks. The road was built directly on naturally deposited subsoils and boulder clay.
