Fourteen test-trenches were opened ahead of a proposed development of 57 dwellings and twelve commercial units. Grange Castle (ruins), represented on the 1838 OS map, was some 12m to the west of the existing limits of the site. The castle was built by the O’Hart family, and ruined remains are referred to by O’Donovan (Ordnance Survey Letters, 1836). No features or artefacts of archaeological interest turned up in the trenches. One dressed window stone of the former castle has been integrated into a nearby shed, on a separate holding.
