During the course of topsoil-stripping of a greenfield site in Cornageeha, Co. Sligo (No. 1159, Excavations 2001), a series of features of possible archaeological interest were uncovered. These consisted of a series of furrows and one subrectangular charcoal-rich feature.
The large number of furrows present occupy the length and width of the field. They were evenly spaced and ran parallel to the existing field boundaries. Random testing of the furrows revealed them to be primarily shallow plough-scars, with the occasional field boundary and land drain present. These were investigated and found to have a loose topsoil fill containing clay pipe stems, post-medieval/modern pottery, red brick fragments and glass. These finds were common to all the furrows encountered. Random sampling of the furrows was carried out. These samples were analysed for seeds etc. using on-site facilities, but nothing of interest was found.
The charcoal-rich feature measuring 1.9m by 0.9m by 0.06m was investigated. Owing to its rectangular shape and very shallow depth close to surface it was also considered to be a post-medieval/ modern agricultural feature, most probably an area for the burning of field waste.
Nothing else of possible archaeological interest was noted during this investigation.
