Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was undertaken in advance of a National Building Agency housing development in a greenfield site in the townland of Cornageeha, approximately 0.5km south of the town of Sligo. An assessment of this site had been carried out by Archaeological Development Services prior to development. This report failed to reach the developer, however, who initiated topsoil-stripping without an archaeological presence. Upon notification of this to DĂșchas, the developer was instructed to cease operations until a licensed archaeologist was present. Topsoil-stripping of 40% of the site was therefore unmonitored. Upon resumption of topsoil-stripping with an archaeologist present, certain areas of possible archaeological interest were noted.
These consisted of numerous furrows, evenly spaced, running parallel to the existing field boundaries. Also noted was a single charcoal-rich feature measuring 1.9m by 0.9m. Nothing else of archaeological interest was uncovered during the course of this monitoring.
