Pre-development testing of the site of a proposed dwelling-house, septic tank and percolation area was carried out on 23 August 2001 at Carrowneden townland, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo. The proposed development is within the constraint area of an enclosure.
The proposed development was situated in relatively high pastureland with good views in most directions. The enclosure was visible a short distance to the south-west of the site. A second enclosure (RMP 16:67) was visible a short distance to the east-north-east. Not visible from the site but located nearby was a ringfort (RMP 16:32) to the south-west and a standing stone (RMP 16:73) to the south-south-east.
Four trial-trenches were excavated. They were 14.7–25m long, 0.9–1.2m wide and 0.3–0.8m deep. The stratigraphy revealed consisted of natural subsoil and bedrock, below the topsoil. This represented natural undisturbed stratigraphy. Three sherds of modern pottery were recovered from the topsoil during testing.
