Pre-development testing took place for eight townhouses within the town of Elphin, near the cathedral. Eight trenches were excavated to a depth of 0.9–1.4m. The majority of the excavated material was redeposited from the construction of the nearby community centre and consisted mostly of refuse dating from the middle of the 20th century. No archaeological material was located, except in Trench 6. Here a stone-lined cut feature filled with fire-reddened clay was clipped by the machine. It was partially exposed by hand and appears to be the remains of a kiln of some description. It was found to be 1.6m in width and up to 1m deep, with the burnt material bounded by large stones. The majority of the feature remains intact, and without further excavation a definite date cannot be assigned to it.
