The proposed development, which was within an archaeological field system, required pre-development testing. Traces of the field enclosures are visible in the field to the immediate north, and in the area of the development. A low earthen bank (0.5m in height and 1m wide) lies immediately east of the dwelling-house.
The area of the dwelling and roadway leading to the house had already been stripped and the foundations of the dwelling had been completed when testing was undertaken. An examination of the spoil from work completed did not indicate that any archaeological artefacts had been disturbed. A further examination of the area of the proposed septic tank and percolation system did not show any evidence for archaeological features above ground.
Three trenches were mechanically excavated. In Trench A the removal of sod uncovered a light brown topsoil with occasional stone inclusions. This layer extended the length of the trench and was 0.35m in depth. Underlying this was an orange/brown natural layer. No features or artefacts of archaeological significance were encountered in this trench. In Trenches B and C excavation of the sod revealed a light brown topsoil, with the occasional stone. This layer was found to extend the length of both trenches and came down onto a light grey, stony, gravel natural layer. Nothing of archaeological significance was revealed in these trenches.
