During the course of the preparation of an archaeological assessment report in relation to the Ferbane Sewerage Scheme, a feature of archaeological potential, Site AR-2, was noted. The feature consisted of a raised D-shaped area, c. 25m north–south, with moderately sloping sides along the curving edge. The surface was generally up to 0.35m above that of the surrounding field, except to the west where it blended into the existing surface.
An evaluation of the feature was undertaken on 6 November 2001. This consisted of the hand-excavation of two trenches across the northern and eastern areas of the feature. The test-trenches indicated that the topsoil, with an average depth of 0.28m, lay directly upon a ‘natural’ undisturbed subsoil, consisting of a stiff yellow/orange sandy clay. This material was investigated to a depth of 0.85m and its morphology was generally consistently similar throughout.
Given the results of the testing, it is clear that the feature is not of archaeological interest. It is most likely a geological feature, possibly formed by flooding episodes of the adjacent River Brosna.
