Monitoring on the site of a proposed gravel pit extension to an existing quarry at Clonfinlough, Co. Offaly, was carried out over a two-day period from 20 August 2001. The proposed site occupies a gravel ridge in an area known as Fighting Hill.
Prior to the commencement of groundworks, the 1ha site was completely overgrown with heather and furze, making field-walking conditions difficult. Excavation exposed a stratigraphy consisting of a loosely compact mid-brown silty topsoil overlying two natural sterile layers consisting of a light brown fine silt with frequent stones and a coarse grey sand. Below this was the compact gravel bed.
