Monitoring of excavations was carried out on the site of a proposed new building at Connaught Street, Birr, Co. Offaly, on 26 April 2001. The development site is within the zone of archaeological potential for Birr but lies outside the suggested course of the 17th-century town defences, as defined by Bradley in the Urban Archaeological Survey of County Offaly. The site measures approximately 7.75m squared, and the insertion of a new raft foundation necessitated ground reduction of 0.3m across the entire area. The excavated material was modern rubble overburden and nothing of archaeological interest was discovered during monitoring.
