Pre-development testing of a site at Main Street, Banagher, Co. Offaly, was undertaken on 29 February 2001. The work involved the demolition of an existing building and the construction of eight townhouses within the zone of archaeological potential for Banagher town.
Three trial-trenches measuring between 15m and 25m in length were excavated through the development area. Trench 1, along the roadside, contained rubble fill over a natural sand and gravel. Trench 2, running through the centre of the site, exposed an isolated spread of cobblestones over black silt above natural sand. Trench 3, to the rear of the site, contained natural layers, all of which were archaeologically sterile.
