An archaeological impact assessment was undertaken on the Glaslough Street site, which is within the zone of archaeological potential associated with the earliest historical development of Monaghan town. The proposed development, however, is limited to the rear of the present street frontage, and therefore removed from the area more likely to contain sensitive archaeological material. The excavation of the two test-trenches appeared to confirm this.
The cobbled surface is quite late in date, overlying as it does deposits which contain ‘modern’ items such as 18th–19th-century pottery, bottle glass and red brick. The pit feature noted at the extreme eastern end of the long trench is also late in date and is of limited archaeological significance. Similarly the small oval pit and drainage gully are most probably either of late date, in the case of the pit, or of limited significance, as in the case of the gully.
