An assessment was carried out to the rear of 74 Glaslough Street, Monaghan, on 12 July 2001. The existing street-front building was retained for renovation; however, an extension and derelict outbuildings within the yard to the rear were removed to permit an assessment in advance of the construction of a new commercial extension which would also provide new access from Peter’s Lake carpark to the rear of the premises.
Rubble overburden and the wall foundations of several early modern outbuildings were removed from the yard, reducing its level by some 0.5m. A single test-trench measuring 13.5m by 1.2m was excavated by mechanical digger east–west through the central area of this narrow yard, revealing mixed rubble, 0.42–0.5m deep, over natural yellow boulder clay. No deposits, features or finds of archaeological significance were revealed. No further archaeological work was undertaken.
