Testing was carried out on 5 May 2001 at Greaghlone townland, Magheracloone, Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan, to determine the impact of the proposed development of a two-storey house, garage, septic tank and ancillary site development works on any surviving archaeological remains on the site. Two test-trenches were excavated.
Test-trench 1 measured 15m (north-west/south-east) by 1.6m. The stratigraphy was dark brown topsoil that immediately overlay a red and grey natural glacial deposit. No archaeological structures or artefacts were uncovered.
Test-trench 2 measured 15m (south-west/north-east) by 1.6m. The stratigraphy was dark brown topsoil that immediately overlay a red and grey natural glacial deposit. The remains of a modern (19th/20th-century) field drain were uncovered. It ran on a north-west/south-east axis and was composed of a deposit of small stones (approximately 0.05–0.1m in length) placed in a cutting. No archaeological artefacts were uncovered.
It was recommended that future groundworks on the site should be monitored.
