Testing took place in March and April 2001 at Main Street, Ratoath, in advance of construction of a commercial development. Eleven test-trenches were excavated across the development area. These revealed a series of medieval ditches and two 19th-century buildings. The ditches were preserved in situ in all but one area—the foundation trench for the proposed development. Excavation of the ditch showed that it had been severely truncated by the construction of the 19th-century buildings as it only survived to a depth of c. 0.3m.
