County: Meath Site name: KILSHARVAN 6, Kilsharvan
Sites and Monuments Record No.: N/A Licence number: 01E0181
Author: Ian Russell, Archaeological Consultancy Services Ltd.
Site type: Burnt spread
Period/Dating: Bronze Age (2200 BC-801 BC)
ITM: E 669909m, N 810745m
Latitude, Longitude (decimal degrees): 53.673397, -6.350355
The site was exposed at chainage 20025 in the western portion of the motorway in the townland of Kilsharvan during monitoring of topsoil-stripping carried out during groundworks associated with the construction of Contract 7 of the Northern Motorway Project.
The site was exposed as a linear/oval area of occasional charcoal flecks lying directly above the orange sandy boulder clay. This area measured 5.06m in length, and a maximum of 0.8m/minimum of 0.27m in width. No further archaeological features or deposits were exposed and no finds were recovered.
It is likely that the charcoal flecks represented a disturbed charcoal spread or deposit possibly associated with the possible settlement/ritual site at Kilsharvan 5 (No. 990, Excavations 2001, 01E0180) which was dated to the early–late Bronze Age.
