Monitoring of the surface water drainage pipeline for a residential development at Johnstown House, Enfield, was carried out by Damian Finn from 14 May and by Ruth Elliott between 12 and 21 June 2001. Two areas of archaeology were uncovered. Area 1, near the entrance road to Johnstown House, was comprised of features associated with a fulacht fiadh and was excavated under licence no. 01E0561 (see No. 972, Excavations 2001). Area 2 was c. 250m to the south-west and, as it lay outside the direct route of the pipeline, was preserved in situ. It was comprised of two sites, Area 2A and 2B, 15m apart. Area 2A consisted of an area of burning and a number of charcoal-filled stake-holes. Area 2B contained a number of small spreads of burnt material and two charcoal-filled stake-holes. No finds were made with which to date either site. No further archaeological finds, features or deposits were uncovered along the route of the pipeline.
