Test excavation within the protected area of a wedge tomb was undertaken in April 2001. The site was investigated as part of the Lough Mask Regional Water Supply Scheme Stage III (see No. 918, Excavations 2001, 01E0314). The test area was c. 10m from the tomb and separated from it by the Ballyhaunis/Bekan road. In 1983 the monument was reconstructed after a portion of the tomb, which was incorporated into the roadside ditch, was bulldozed during reclamation work.

Two perpendicular trenches, 2m (north–south) by 4m, were tested by hand. Excavation showed that the area had been highly disturbed in recent times by water pipes which were found in both trenches. The surrounding test area, c. 150m by 23m, was stripped using a mechanical digger. The area was traversed by cultivation furrows. No archaeological deposits or features were discovered. A small fragment of chert débitage was found in the topsoil.
