A rescue excavation took place over four weeks as part of the archaeological investigations on the Knock–Claremorris Bypass. The excavation revealed an area of heat-fractured stone and charcoal, 6.7m north–south by 6.2m. Underlying the deposit was a shallow layer of peat which overlay mineral soil. A small oval depression cut into the mineral soil was believed to be the remains of an unlined trough. An area of charcoal-rich peat on the southern edge of the burnt spread was found in association with a layer of wood, mainly silver birch. One or two pieces of the wood had been roughly pointed. There were no finds from the excavation and radiocarbon dates from the charcoal samples are awaited.
