Nine test-trenches were opened at a proposed development site of five houses at Cloghan, Westport, which shared the same field as a univallate ringfort. The fort occupies the highest point in the field and no part of the development comes within 15m of it. In nearly all trenches the subsoil consisted of an orange or grey gravel. No archaeological features were detected. While artefacts were plentiful from most trenches, they consisted mainly of modern pottery and natural white quartz stones, and all were retrieved from the brown-grey clay topsoil.
