Pre-development testing of a proposed dwelling-house, garage, access road and septic tank was carried out on 6 September 2001 at Carrowmore, Kilcommon, Carras, Co. Mayo. The proposed development is within the constraint area of an enclosure.
The proposed development, to the east of the enclosure, was located in a broad meadow, to the north of Cloghans Hill off the KilmaineāTuam road.
Five trial-trenches, measuring between 10m and 20m, were excavated. The stratigraphy was uniform throughout and consisted of a thick sod and topsoil layer over a dark brown silt with a moderate amount of angular stones. Below this was a fractured bed of natural limestone bedrock. The few finds retrieved from the trenches were all modern in date.
