Monitoring was carried out on groundworks prior to the construction of an extension to an existing structure. The site is located at the rear of No. 9A on the south side of Francis Street, immediately outside the line of defences of the medieval town and south of the site of upper Seatown Gate. Work was carried out on 2 and 25 June 2001.

A number of modern outbuildings had previously been demolished, leaving a mixture of modern construction debris. A concrete floor was removed and the underlying rubble cleared to a depth of 0.2m in order to excavate the foundation footings. Pre-existing stone footings were not damaged.

No archaeological features were uncovered, and no finds of archaeological significance were found.
