Test excavations in advance of a housing development, which consisted of a series of thirteen 60m-long trenches covering a 28-acre greenfield site outside Dundalk along the Castletown River, revealed no features, levels or artefacts of archaeological or historical value. Two fragments of cut limestone and several 19th- or 20th-century objects found in the vicinity of the demolished Salttown House may have originated from there. The large size of the area not excavated during the trial excavation prompts the recommendation of further monitoring of soil-stripping during the initial phases of the proposed development.
