The site lies at the edge of cultivated ground on the west slopes of Carrabane Mountain and within an area marked as ‘enclosure’ on the SMR map (4:44). The first edition OS sheet marks a circular feature here but it was not marked on later editions. There are no features to be distinguished on the ground inside the development site although it is possible that the field boundary along the south-east follows the line of the enclosure.
Five trenches tested the site. The exact location of the dwelling-house had not been finalised and two alternative locations were tested with four trenches; the fifth trench tested the percolation area for the septic tank. In all of the trenches there was a layer of very soft peaty soil overlying hard compacted grey sand. Nothing of archaeological significance was exposed in the trenches and no artefacts were found.
