The site was located to the rear of Market Square, close to the remains of an artillery bastion (SMR 17:101(06)) of 17th-century date. It was proposed to construct twelve apartments in two three-storey blocks. Three trenches were opened as part of a site assessment, but there was no evidence for any archaeological features or deposits. The stratigraphy was homogeneous throughout the trenches, consisting of deep organic soil reflecting the previous long-term use of the site as a vegetable garden for the adjacent hotel.
