Monitoring was carried out during topsoil-stripping and subsurface works in advance of the construction of 47 dwelling-houses at Farrandreg, Dundalk, Co. Louth. The sod and topsoil extended to an average depth of 0.25m, revealing two separate areas of stratigraphy as well as the natural subsoils. The first of these areas was an isolated feature containing burnt mound material, while the second was a more extensive area of similar material (which on excavation was identified as a fulacht fiadh). These two features were later excavated under individual licences (see Excavations 2001, Nos 855 and 856, 01E1008 and 01E1009 respectively).
The subsurface works for twenty houses and the perimeter wall were also monitored but did not expose any archaeological features or deposits.
