Dundalk Urban District Council requested that the groundworks associated with a residential extension should be monitored. The site lay c. 100m from ‘Seatown Castle’, the 15th-century bell-tower of the mid-13th-century Franciscan ‘Grey’ abbey. Test excavations by Rosanne Meenan 50–60m from the development site uncovered burials of unknown date (Excavations 1996, No. 286, 96E0320). These may have been associated with the cemetery of the Franciscan abbey.
No archaeological materials were found in the trenches excavated, which contained garden soil on top of sandy gravels. This suggests that the cemetery’s limits lay to the west of the development site, though the absence of archaeological evidence may also have been caused by subsequent disturbance.
