This site, 99BG0004a–b, was excavated as part of the 2001 Bord na Móna (BnM) Mitigation Project. The cutting location and size were determined in the mitigation strategy document prepared by Dúchas and the National Museum of Ireland. This cutting, which measured 2m by 3m, was located approximately 50m south of Cutting 1 of 01E0767 (see No. 812, Excavations 2001). The site did not extend into the BnM field to the west as it was at a much lower level and the site would not have survived in this field. There were numerous wood chips located around the drain face where the site had been milled. The site lay in brown/orange mottled Sphagnum spp peat. It was moderately humified with inclusions of Eriophorum (bog cotton) and grass/sedge material.
The togher was composed of five closely spaced longitudinally laid roundwoods. There was some bark noted around the wood, which was all broken into several pieces. The site measured 1.2m in width and was 0.2m in depth. It could be traced to the east for a total distance of 11.2m. Overall the wood was in moderate condition. The worked ends were recorded and two of them were worked to chisel points and one to a pencil point. The facets were generally flat, cut with a metal tool with cutting angles averaging 50°.
