A test excavation was carried out in January 2001 on the site of a proposed apartment block development at South Quay (Knockane), Newcastle West. Four cuttings were opened by mechanical excavator. The site was discovered to be very disturbed by the construction and subsequent demolition, in the 20th century, of a number of buildings along South Quay, including a power plant, a sawmill and a cinema. Cutting 2 contained part of a stone-revetted channel associated with the sawmill. There were no archaeological features in any of the cuttings.
