Test-trenching in advance of an extension to a premises on Mungret Street was undertaken in April 2001. Two trenches were excavated to a depth of c. 1.5m. The stratigraphy in both trenches consisted of a 0.2–0.5m layer of overburden, which overlay a 0.3–0.5m layer of mixed mortar. This layer overlay a natural sandy silt some 1.4m below ground surface. The remains of a limestone wall were found in Trench A and this could have represented the wall of a garden property or a building foundation. This boundary appeared to be present on the first edition plan for the site. One fragment of Staffordshire slipware was recovered from a mixed clay and mortar fill in Trench B.
