The route of the Limerick Southern Ring-Road, from Rathbane to Carrowkeel, was ploughed prior to the commencement of topsoil-stripping. The ploughed fields were divided into 10m grid squares and a programme of field-walking was carried out along the entire line of the road. A number of flint fragments were recovered from a field to the west of the Kilmallock road, and a total of 38 test-trenches, each measuring 10m by 10m, were opened across this field. The ploughsoil layer was 0.3m deep and contained frequent inclusions of modern pottery. This overlay a sterile boulder clay in all the trenches. No archaeological features or finds were exposed in the tested portion of this field.
