Monitoring of a proposed natural gas pipeline installation along Main Street and Railway Street, Portlaoise town, was carried out in June 2001. The pipeline crosses into the ‘area of archaeological potential’ for Portlaoise, close to a number of identified sites of archaeological potential, including the town ramparts. Monitoring followed assessment and subsequent monitoring along Fintan Lalor Avenue, carried out in March 2000 (Excavations 2000, No. 561).
Installation of the pipeline involved excavation by JCB of a number of small inspection pits, and trenchless boring machinery was used to install the 4-inch plastic pipe within an existing disused water-main pipeline. Monitoring of this development revealed nothing of archaeological significance.
