An assessment was carried out at the rear of Langton’s Hotel, 68–69 John Street. The proposed development, a glass conservatory, is near the standing remains of the city wall and is within the zone of archaeological potential identified in the Urban Archaeological Survey. It is on the eastern side of the River Nore in the medieval suburb of St John’s.
Three test-trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed new structure. Trenches 1 and 2 revealed nothing of archaeological significance. Trench 3 was excavated parallel to the city wall and the remains of a limestone and red brick foundation were exposed at the southern end of the trench at 43.41m OD. Rocque’s map of 1758 and the OS map of 1842 both indicate a mill building in this area. A red brick wall projecting from the city wall is in line with the remains of the foundation and it is likely that they are associated with the mill building. Monitoring was recommended during construction.
