A 2km stretch of the R693 between Kilkenny and Freshford was realigned at Threecastles, a medieval town dominating a bridge over the River Nore and its floodplain. The chosen route avoided any recorded sites and monuments, but soil-stripping and earth-moving were monitored.

Other than the underground limekiln and human skeletons at Cooleeshalmore (see Excavations 2001, No. 685), and ploughed-out field boundaries and occasional relatively recent animal burials and pits, nothing significant was revealed.
