A programme of testing, followed by monitoring, was carried out on a proposed dwelling-house development in Burnchurch, Cuffesgrange, Co. Kilkenny, on 28 September and 31 October 2001 respectively. The proposed development is located within range of a small cluster of archaeologically and architecturally significant sites. These include a Church of Ireland church, a castle and tower-house.
The site runs along a north–south axis and encompasses an area 40m east–west by 75m. The proposed residence is positioned in the southern half of the site. The existing north-western boundary includes a section of the graveyard wall. A new entrance and driveway leading to the public roadway are being established and a new boundary is being constructed along the north-eastern perimeter of the proposed site. It is also proposed to reinstate the boundary wall with the graveyard site to the north-west. A number of soak-pits and a septic tank and percolation area also form part of the proposed development.
A natural light yellowish brown sandy subsoil was sealed by a varying depth of sod and topsoil. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted.
