The digging of test-pits by engineering staff was monitored. The site investigations were in connection with Phase 2 of Waterford Main Drainage, which will bring wastewater to a treatment plant in south Kilkenny.
The test-pits were chosen on the basis of earlier impact assessments. There were two areas in which possible archaeological features might have been found. The first was on the road north of Abbeylands Church, which is believed to be the site of an earlier Augustinian nunnery founded in 1151. The test-trench exposed an anomalous fill of stones at the north-western end. This was noted as a possible backfill of an enclosure.
A second item of interest noted was a large boulder with linear markings. Whilst not typical of an ogham stone, the marks were not geological in origin. The location of the stone and detailed photographs of the markings have been sent to DĂșchas for expert interpretation.
